GULO GULO (Rio Grande) ... $26.80
Click For More
Gulo Gulo is actually another name for the wolverine, but while the name "wolverine" conjures images of ferocity (not to mention a certain X-Men character), the name gulo gulo conjures images of a somewhat friendlier nature. And that's exactly as it should be, since this new Rio Grande game emphasizes the cuddlier aspects of these creatures. Players take on the roles of adult Gulos searching for a lost Gulo junior and stealing swamp vulture eggs. On each turn a player can turn over a yard tile which specifies a type of egg to steal. If the egg is stolen successfully (more on this later) the player can move onto the tile (and thus get that much closer to the lost Gulo junior). The first player to steal a purple egg AND find Gulo junior wins the game. Without a doubt, the egg theft mechanic of this game is one of the most inventive ever. All of the wooden eggs are placed in a medium-sized wooden cup. A pole with an egg on top of it (called the alarm pole) is placed and held in the middle of the eggs. As players steal eggs, the pole's position becomes shakier and shakier. If the alarm pole falls, the player who caused it to fall must move back at least one tile and in some cases must move all the way back to the start. This latest game from Wolfgang Kramer features outstanding components and the best of abstract and dexterity-driven gameplay. 2-6 players, 5+, 15-20 mins.
